Challenge:
NASA’s mission to explore the solar system delivers an 8-bladed rotorcraft to visit Saturn’s largest and richly organic moon, Titan. Dragonfly will sample and examine dozens of promising sites around Saturn’s icy moon and advance our search for the building blocks of life.
Solution:
Our disc springs are used to help provide much-needed stability during the landing phase of the mission. The assembly is mounted inside a swivel device that works to prevent any parachute spin being imparted onto the probe below. During the mission, the disc spring stack will be subjected to cryogenic temperatures of 63 K, (-210 degC). Product design and material selection are critical factors in mission success.

Schnorr Precision Engineered Load Washers

The term ‘load washer’ is used to describe a spring element in the form of a disc spring that achieves its locking effect solely by means of the frictional connection.

These precision engineered washers are intended to compensate for loosening of the screwed connection, for example, due to setting, by maintaining a sufficiently high pretension in the connection with spring force. They are especially suitable for primarily axially loaded, short bolts. However, they provide no effective security against unscrewing due to alternating lateral loading.

Schnorr Heavy Duty Precision Engineered Load Washers (HDS)

Manufactured to DIN 6796, these precision engineered washers have been specially developed for high-strength bolts of grades 8.8 to 12.9. They are available for bolt sizes M2 to M30, making them ideal for demanding industrial applications.

High Stress Precision Engineered Load Washers (HS)

These precision engineered washers have a smaller outer diameter than heavy-duty load washers (DIN 6796). A notable feature of these washers is the slightly curved form, which provides a progressively increasing characteristic curve. Despite the smaller outside diameter dimensions, this makes it possible to achieve the same load as the heavy-duty load washers. These washers are primarily used when the space available is insufficient for standard load washers. They are available for bolt sizes M6 to M30.

HEAVY DUTY LOAD WASHERS 'HDS'

The HDS washers have been specifically developed for high-strength bolts in the strength classes 8.8 –10.9 as per DIN ISO 898 Part 1 (SAE Grade 5). The loads of the washers have been matched to these bolts and are 70 to 90% of the bolt load in the flat state. These high loads naturally require large cross-sections, which is why the outside diameter of the load washer is considerably larger than that of the Schnorr serrated safety washer. As a result, the area required for a design with load washers cannot be ignored. As a highly progressive load increase occurs at the end of the spring deflection when the washer is flattened, the load has been indicated as double the calculated value in the following table. Tests are shown that these values are comparable with the measured values.
The HDS washers contained in the table conform to DIN 6796, Edition October 1987 ‘Conical spring washers for bolted connections’. The test specifications are laid down in DIN 267 Part 26 ‘Fasteners; technical specifications for elements made of spring steel for bolted connections’.
